YouTube Kids is a special version of the famous video hosting, adjusted for usage by kids. It filters inappropriate content and brings its recommendations for young spectators. Download YouTube Kids and make it the best edutainment for your youngest!
In fact, it’s YouTube. The app lets you play videos from its servers, but the difference is made by the content. This app is meant for younger users, from toddlers to under-teens. So it offers first of all special channels and separate videos made for children.
The app can use either a whitelist or blacklist principle. The former offers only manually approved content by checked providers, like DC Kids, Monster High, Dreamworks TV, and programs curated by pop stars for elder kids. The latter makes everything available unless blacklisted video with explicitly inappropriate content. You can create up to eight various profiles, each with its own restrictions.
The developers admit that filtering isn’t perfect yet, and they invite us to help. If you suddenly see a video that’s obviously not meant for kids, you can report it with a special menu. It wouldn’t mean deletion from YouTube; the reported video just won’t be available to kids anymore.
Not being a parent myself, I just examined the app, and then queried my friends how their children love YouTube Kids. The overall impression was positive, but some answered that their youngest got too addicted to it, and attempts to set limits ended up in tears.
Ease of Use
The interface of this app is as simplified as it can be. Though we cannot do without words at all in descriptions, the app itself is visual enough for those unable to read yet. So don’t be surprised if your four-year-old masters it quicker than you do. There are features that require basic literacy (like searching by name), but the app is quite functional without it.
There is little to be said about the design because in apps like this you first of all watch videos and they are displayed okay. The overall design is kid-friendly, with little detail, but with large icons hard to miss, visual pictures on them, and distinctive buttons and bars for controlling playback. Being, after all, a YouTube app, it’s compatible with Chromecast or Smart TV. I tried it with my LG TV, and the app was quick to detect the TV and play videos on it.
It’s great to have this specialized app absolutely for free, while kids require great expense anyway. A single app with your account may support up to eight profiles.
- Easy interface;
- Content filtered for kids;
- Lots of offers in various sections;
- Filtering database always updated;
- The filtering system isn’t perfect, and even approved content may be inappropriate with the wrong age;
- Videos may get very addictive.
