Messenger by Facebook is an app for texting, voice and video calls by Facebook. It’s one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, as it only requires your Facebook account. You can download Messenger separately from the core Facebook app and only use it for private communication.

Features

First of all, the app is meant for exchanging private messages between users. They can contain plain text, include links, attached photos and videos, as well as location, GIF stickers or invitations to play Facebook-based games. The app has its own set of stickers and emoji to make the communication more expressive. Messenger supports both private and group chats.

To authorize, you need to enter your Facebook credentials. Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram, or Viber, it’s not bound to your phone number, though it strongly recommends you register one. Facebook profiles are fetched automatically, and if a user has a profile photo on Facebook, it’s displayed as an avatar in Messenger.

The app is available for Android and iOS; recently it’s been removed from Windows Phone store. There are also apps for Windows 10 and OS X; on any other platform it can be accessed on messenger.com.

If you happen to live in the US, UK, or France, the app can also be a sort of wallet for money transfers.

Ease of Use

The app is intuitively designed, so even when you run it first, it’s easy. It’s integrated with the core Facebook app, but it only shows you the number of incoming messages. Both on Android and on iOS Messenger can receive shared data from other apps. It’s better than Telegram or WhatsApp suited to send documents that need to be opened on PC.

Design

The app looks like a regular messenger; in landscape mode, it features contact list in the left column and the current chat in the right. In portrait mode, you switch between these two. Both ways are quite comfortable, though the larger is your screen, the more preferable is the landscape option. On the tablet, this columned view is always used.

The color scheme is similar to Facebook; the two apps are highly integrated, so you can access the user’s profile on Facebook by clicking the button in Messenger. The night mode has been introduced recently, especially great on AMOLED screens.

Pricing

Like all Facebook apps, Messenger is free for private users. You only pay for the data you use. There are also no ads, yet there is a recommendation section where paid suggestions can be encountered.

Pros

  • Advanced private and group chat messaging, audio and video calls;
  • Various attachments supported;
  • High integration with Facebook;
  • Phone number not necessary;
  • Good design with night mode.

Cons

  • The app is rather heavy for a messenger;
  • There’s no alternative to it if you use the Facebook main app;
  • Facebook’s failures affect Messenger, as well.

Summary

It’s one of the most popular apps for messaging in the world; if you download Messenger, you’ll have an easier way to reach your friends, colleagues, or Facebook buddies. And if you use Facebook extensively, Messenger is a must.
